The Minority in Parliament has boycotted the vetting of Herbert Krapah, nominated by President Akufo Addo as Minister of State at the Energy Ministry.
President Akufo Addo cited the heavy workload at the Energy Ministry as the reason for nominating Krapah, currently a deputy minister in the same department.
During the Appointments Committee sitting, Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah outlined the caucus’ reasons for boycotting the process.
He stated that “the nomination was not published in a national newspaper,” which prevented the public from submitting memoranda or making representations to the committee. This lack of transparency was a significant concern for the Minority.
Furthermore, Buah questioned the necessity of appointing a Minister of State at the Energy Ministry when a substantive Minister is already in place. He argued that the nomination seemed to perpetuate the “bloated size of the government,” which the Minority has consistently opposed.
The Minority issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to due process and public participation.
“The minority wishes to serve notice that it will not be part of any hasty process deliberately designed by the majority to deny the people of Ghana participation in the work of the appointment committee and Ghana’s democracy,” Buah declared.
The caucus remains steadfast in its stance against any ministerial nominee that adds to the government’s size without proper public involvement.
