In a groundbreaking move to address the intertwined challenges of climate change and the inclusion of persons with disabilities, the Parliament of Ghana has announced the inauguration of the Climate and Disability Caucuses.
This initiative, under the theme “Strengthening Legislative Action for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Development in Ghana,” marks a significant commitment by Parliament to harness advocacy, legislative measures, and inclusive practices.
The launch event highlighted the crucial role of accessibility and collaboration in ensuring that persons with disabilities can actively participate in societal development while contributing to climate resilience efforts.
Climate change poses a profound threat to the socio-economic stability of Ghana, exacerbating issues such as water scarcity, food insecurity, and increased poverty levels.
According to the 2017 Ghana State of the Environment report, critical sectors like agriculture, health, water resources, infrastructure, transportation, energy, and waste management are highly sensitive to climate impacts.
The establishment of the Climate Caucus aims to bolster resilience and adaptability to these changing conditions, promoting sustainable development practices that emphasize environmental conservation and resource sustainability.
The Ghana Parliamentary Climate Caucus is dedicated to advocating for policies and initiatives that support climate-smart agriculture, sustainable forestry, resilient infrastructure, and comprehensive training programs.
By focusing on the sustainable use of natural resources and enhancing capacity-building efforts, the caucus seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
The Rt Hon Speaker, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, reaffirmed his commitment to the well-being of persons with disabilities, underscoring the constitutional mandate to create an inclusive society that ensures justice and equality for all.
Dr. Clement Apaak, Chairman of the Disability Caucus, emphasized the personal relevance of disability issues, reminding everyone that disability can affect anyone at any time.
Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, Chairman of the Climate Committee, highlighted the devastating impacts of climate change, including crop losses, property damage, and community displacement.
He stressed the importance of inclusivity in the fight for a sustainable environment, advocating for legislative actions that prioritize the needs and contributions of all citizens, particularly those with disabilities.
