Prisons Service gets cycling boost ahead of Duku Festival debut

The Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) is set to donate four bicycles to the Ghana Prisons Service as the newly approved Prisons Service cycling team prepares for its debut at the Duku Festival cycling race.

The donation is scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Prisons Headquarters in Accra and will be led by GCF Secretary General Shaaban Mohammed.

The initiative forms part of the federation’s efforts to expand cycling across the country while encouraging greater participation by Ghana’s security services.

The Prisons Service recently secured approval in principle for the establishment of its cycling team, with the decision communicated through the office of the Director-General of Prisons.

The approval was granted on behalf of the Director-General by Benedict Bob-Dery, Director of Prisons in charge of Operations, Finance and Management, subject to the completion of the necessary administrative arrangements.

The Service described the initiative as a commendable development that aligns with its broader wellness objectives. Coordination of the team’s implementation has been assigned to the Director of Prisons in charge of Welfare, who oversees the Service’s Sports Unit.

The Prisons Service team is expected to make its competitive debut at the Duku Festival cycling race in Osu on Sunday, August 9.

The Ghana Police Service has also confirmed its participation, setting the stage for a potentially competitive contest between the two security institutions.

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing to establish a cycling team for the Ghana Armed Forces. Engagements are reportedly being held with Head of Security Coordinator, Major General (Rtd) Lord Ativor, as efforts continue to bring the Army into the growing security services cycling programme.

If successful, the initiative would further expand the presence of Ghana’s security services in cycling and provide more opportunities to promote fitness, discipline and competitive sport within the services.
