The stage is set for a fierce political battle as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secured the number one spot on the ballot for the December 7, 2024, presidential elections.
In a highly anticipated Electoral Commission (EC) balloting event held in Accra on September 20, Evans Nimako, NPP’s Director of Elections, pulled the first position, giving the ruling party a significant psychological boost ahead of the polls.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), meanwhile, took the 8th position, a number laden with symbolism for the opposition party. NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey linked the number to what he described as “eight years of decay” under the NPP.
“This is the moment to end the darkness and restore order after eight years of failed leadership,” Kwetey remarked, confidently positioning his party for a comeback.
The EC’s balloting didn’t just focus on the major political players, as independent candidates also secured their spots. Kofi Koranteng will appear 10th on the ballot, while George Twum Barima secured 11th. High-profile independent candidate Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, will run under his New Force Movement in the 12th position, while the Movement for Change claimed the final slot at number 13.
The mix of political giants and independent challengers promises an intense and unpredictable election season.
The balloting event followed the EC’s earlier announcement that several aspirants had been disqualified for failing to meet basic nomination requirements, despite being given extended deadlines to rectify errors.
Among the disqualified were Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP).
