The Omanhene of the Wenchi Traditional Area, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, has issued a powerful directive ordering the immediate cessation of all illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey within his jurisdiction.

This bold move, announced on January 5, 2025, reflects growing concern over the environmental destruction caused by unauthorized mining operations. Companies involved in illegal mining have been instructed to vacate their sites and remove all equipment by 6 PM the same day.

In a strongly-worded statement signed by Reindorf Oware, the Omanhene declared, “All operations must cease, and you are required to remove any machinery and equipment from the site by 6 PM today.”

The statement clarified that no company or individual had received authorization to exploit land within the Wenchi Traditional Area, emphasizing the community’s commitment to safeguarding its natural resources.

The directive also mandated companies to undertake immediate restorative measures, including filling excavated pits and restoring degraded lands to their original state. The Omanhene warned of severe repercussions for non-compliance, asserting that all stakeholders must respect the laws governing the traditional area.

“Non-compliance with these instructions will lead to serious repercussions,” the statement cautioned.

This decisive action aligns with national efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” which has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s environment.

The Omanhene called on residents and stakeholders to support the initiative, stressing the importance of preserving the integrity of the Wenchi lands. “Your immediate cooperation in this critical matter is essential,” he added.
