President Mahama revokes MMDA Chief Executives’ appointments

President John Dramani Mahama has terminated the appointments of all Chief Executives for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.

The directive, effective immediately, was communicated through a letter signed by Dr. Calistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, on Wednesday, January 8.

According to the letter, the decision was made under the powers vested in the President by the Local Governance Act. It also revoked the appointments of Assembly Members who were appointed by the previous administration. This move marks a significant restructuring of local governance leadership in the country.

To ensure the continuity of administrative functions, the letter instructed that Coordinating Directors of the respective MMDAs temporarily assume the roles of acting Chief Executives until new appointments are made.

This interim measure aims to maintain stability during the transition period.

Meanwhile, some outgoing government-appointed Assembly Members, who served in various MMDAs over the past four years, are demanding the payment of their ex gratia. They argue that their contributions to local governance deserve due recognition and prompt settlement.
