The two most rival and crucial clubs in the Ghana Premier League have relinquished the 2022/23 league title. Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak have failed to keep the promises they allegedly gave to their supporters.
Both teams have won only 12 games out of the 32 played this season, while the Kumasi and Accra-based clubs have lost 8 and 11 matches, respectively.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko
Asante Kotoko were premier league champions for the 2021/22 season, headed by Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum. The Management of the Porcupine Warriors was held to surprise after Coach Ogum submitted his resignation to the Board of Directors in Kumasi, this was due to the disagreement over the recruitment of players for the forthcoming season.
But later in August 2022, the club confirmed former Burkina Faso national team gaffer Seydou Zerbo as the club’s new head coach. However, the unpleasing performance of the Coach forced the club to part ways with the in March 2023.
After the departure of Coach Zerbo, Abdul Gazale succeeded as caretaker of the team.
Accra Hearts of Oak
The Phobians started the season with outrageous energy after they retained the MTN FA Cup for the second time, consecutively by Coach Samuel Boadu.
But, in September 2022, the Management of Accra Hearts of Oak announced the termination of the contract with Coach Boadu despite winning 5 trophies for the club in 2 years.
Following the dismissal of the hardworking coach, club board member Vincent Sowah Odotei was forced to resign in October 2022 after the club failed to qualify for the next stage of the CAF Confederations Cup.
Serbian tactician Coach Slavco Matic was appointed as head coach of the club. He was mandated by the Board to win the league title as they believe will bring calm to the supporters of the club.
However, disgruntled fans threatened the Serbian by warning him to stay away from the club due to the club’s poor performances in the league, accusing the coach of his flawed tactics in crucial matches.
Few days after the threat, the club parted ways with the Slavco.
Meanwhile, Tarkwa-based Medeama Sporting Club is the title contender with 56 points accumulated, Kotoko has 48 points in the 4th position while Hearts of Oak has 45 points in the 8th position. Two more matches to end the season.
